Immigration
Tim Nelson: My Stand on Immigration — A Summary
- Our nation must secure its borders so that all immigration is lawful.
- Immigration policy should allow lawful immigration to match the seasonal and permanent employment needs of our economy.
- Current federal government policy unfairly forces state and local authorities in border states to address problems that should be solved at the national level. We should be compensated for the cost of these efforts.
- In our local enforcement of immigration laws, top priority should go to crimes that directly affect public safety.
- We must be especially vigilant in fighting the violent “coyotes” who smuggle human beings into our country.
- In enforcing the laws that apply to employment, we must focus on employers who systematically undercut our labor markets by hiring undocumented labor at below minimum wage rates.
- We can and must effectively enforce our laws without racially profiling anyone.
- Lawful American citizens should not have to worry about being detained for failing to carry proof of citizenship.
- No one should be discouraged from reporting crimes he or she witnesses or is the victim of -- regardless of immigration status.
- The United States must respect its immigrant heritage and ensure that lawful immigrants have equal opportunity to pursue the American Dream.
